Scratch Mommy Handmade Organic Makeup

Scrach Mommy MakeupScratch Mommy (now, Pronounce Skincare) founder Jessica Healey is a pro at DIY natural cosmetic. Her most famous recipe on how to DIY your own smooth finish DIY organic foundation with sunscreen is an absolute hit on Pinterest. She has a full step-by-step recipe on the blog here, and you’ll see how easy it is to make. However, if you’re not that into DIY or just don’t want to burden yourself with purchasing all these ingredients (though they are really simple), Scratch Mommy has an online shop with all these freshly made products ready to be ordered.

A very creamy foundation, which moisturizes the skin and gives a lovely glow. I would recommend this foundation for someone with normal to dry skin types because it might feel a little bit greasy if your skin tends to get oily. I also have to mention that I did apply this foundation without using a day cream prior application (I guess that’s my way of living on the wild side!), but my skin still felt comfortable.

The application of this foundation is quick and easy. Because it’s a cream foundation, I find that the best ways to apply it are using my clean fingers or a damp makeup sponge. I’m not excited about the scent – it does smell strongly of shea butter. It would be absolutely fine by me because the foundation doesn’t contain any additional perfume, but the scent is detectable almost all the time when I have the foundation on my face. So if you’re sensitive to strong scents, it might be annoying or even irritating.

Speaking about coverage, it’s a light foundation, which doesn’t give any coverage. Instead, it evens out the skin tone and gives radiance. I like the result, but I don’t like that it leaves tiny black/brown beads on my face. I guess these are either from cinnamon or from cacao powder, but they are clearly visible in the jar and do not melt/disappear with the application. Scratch Mommy foundation comes in three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark. My skin tone is fair, so shade Light suits me perfectly.

See the ingredients:

Almond Oil (and/or Apricot Oil), Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Zinc Oxide (uncoated, non-nano, and not micronized), Cacao Powder, *Cinnamon. Raw, unrefined, 100% certified organic.

Cream Foundation is available here and goes for $25/£20 for 30ml.

Scratch Mommy Organic Handmade PowderFacial Powder*
Another pure and simple makeup product from Scratch Mommy beauty range. Pure because all the ingredients are organic and simple with only five of them, including zinc oxide, which works as a sunscreen. The powder has a gentle cinnamon scent, which is so lovely that I keep reaching for the jar.

It comes in three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark. Shade Light is a porcelain shade for fair skin tones. This loose powder somehow has rough consistency, but it applies on the skin quickly and evenly. It gives very little, almost none, coverage but since it contains fast-absorbing ingredients, it prevents combination/oily skin types from getting too oily throughout the day. Unfortunately, for dry skin, the powder feels too cakey and drying.

See the ingredients:

Arrowroot Powder, Cacao Powder, Cinnamon, Zinc Oxide (uncoated, non-nano, and not micronized), Vitamin E. Raw, unrefined, 100% certified organic.

Facial Powder is available here and goes for $17/£15 for 20ml.

I love that the face powder has zinc for sun protection.

Yes! I am a huge DIY makeup enthusiast, but I use minerals instead of food like cacao and spices. I’ve tried this and it was okay, but it left cinnamon flecks on my face. Very creamy though!
