Natural Deodorants | Clean Beauty Awards 2021

Clean Beauty Awards 2021 Organic DeodorantsBecoming a judge in Clean Beauty Awards, hosted by Certclean, was an absolutely amazing experience. I participated in the CBA the second year in a row, and this year I was lucky to rate two different categories: skincare and deodorants. You can read the whole post about my experience with skincare category here.

Today, I want to share about deodorants, which are actually my second favorite category after skincare. Like with the other category, I received 6 products to rate based on my personal user experience:
– Dom’s Calm Deodorant
– Ginger Michelle Make A Wish Natural Deodorant Balm
– Cris’s Blends Patchouli Charcoal Natural Vegan Deodorant
– Cris’s Blends Island Breeze Natural Vegan Deodorant
– I Luv It Naturally Sensitive Sweetheart Deodorant
– Ultrella Sunshine Lime Natural Deodorant
I’m not going to preach the importance of your underarm friend being made with only natural ingredients. I think if you’re here, you’ve probably figured that out by now. There’s still a myth out there that there’s a lack of good natural deodorant (which I totally disagree with). What I want to do is to make known about as many natural deodorants as possible. That way, you can see if there’s one for you.

Cris's Blends Vegan Cruelty Free DeodorantsI hope this Cris’s Blends Patchouli Charcoal Natural Vegan Deodorant (92g for $11.99) gets to win the awards. Formulated with magnesium, baking soda, and arrowroot powder, this vegan, cruelty-free deodorant is a powerful tool against excessive sweating and bad odor. It comes in a sustainable paper tube, which is easy to use. My only concern is that the container might get a bit messy if the deodorant is exposed to hot temperatures, so I wouldn’t carry it in, let’s say, my purse. But other than that, I love it. It is placed under the “men’s” category on the brand’s website, probably because of its “manly” scent. However, I’d call it a unisex product because I don’t see why a woman could not use it and enjoy its benefits.

Food/Pharmaceutical grade Magnesium Hydroxide, Organic Coconut oil, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Apricot Kernel Oil, Organic Fractionated coconut oil, Natural Baking Soda, Organic Candelilla wax, Organic Shea butter, Organic Essential oils, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Tocopherol, MT-50 (vitamin E), Organic Activated Charcoal.

Cris’s Blends Island Breeze Natural Vegan Deodorant (92g for $11.99) is created specifically for sensitive skin. Meaning, there are no ingredients that might potentially be irritating to your armpit area. Usually, the only ingredient removed is baking soda because it’s the number one irritant in natural deodorants. There’s a belief that deodorants containing baking soda are usually more effective. Still, in my opinion, it solely depends on the product, like this Island Breeze Natural Deodorant, which is armed with other ingredients such as magnesium and arrowroot powder. It works well, and I don’t even miss the baking soda in it. Another thing that I like is its creamy texture. I like the way it glides on the skin without the need to rub it in too much. My only issue with this deodorant is its packaging (the same problem with the Patchouli Charcoal Deodorant). Also, the scent could be more gentle since everyone around me seems to notice that my pits smell like Pina Coladas, but this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Doms Natural Deodorant CalmI absolutely love it when I have only good things to say about a product! DOM’S Calm Natural Deodorant (50ml for $19.99) ticks all the boxes a natural effective deodorant should tick. First of all, it comes in a reusable or recyclable glass container with a compostable bamboo lid. Second, the texture is lovely! It is silky, smooth, and does not feel greasy at all. Alright, and the third thing is its divine scent. Honestly, lavender is one of the best scents to have in a deodorant. However, if you don’t like lavender, DOM’S has other scents available. My experience is really good with this product. From easy application to its ability to protect me from becoming a stinky mess. Love it; nothing more can be added here.

Love & Gratitude*, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil*, zea mays (corn) starch*, sodium bicarbonate (aluminum free baking soda), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil*, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter*, copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax*, magnesium hydroxide (dietary magnesium), cetearyl olivate (and) sorbitan olivate, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil*, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil*, tocopherol (vitamin e), brassica glycerides, * CERTIFIED ORGANIC

Ultrella Sunshine Lime Natural DeodorantUltrella Sunshine Lime Natural Deodorant (60ml for $13) is the only natural deodorant in this category that is not only a deodorant, but also a natural antiperspirant. Antiperspirant means that it protects from bad odor and reduces the amount of sweat your armpits produce. With Ultrella’s IBR-Snowflake® technology, that reduction is about 1/3, which, in my eyes, is reasonable and healthy enough. Especially if you’re a profuse sweater, like me. Another thing that I like about this deodorant is its packaging. It looks fun and bright and is easy to quickly spot in your makeup bag. Moreover, it’s convenient to carry on the go without worrying about any leaks. The scent is fresh that of citrus fruit.

Total Naturally Derived 100%. Made in NZ from local and imported ingredients.

I Luv U Naturally Sensitive Sweetheart Natural DeodorantI Luv It Naturally Sensitive Sweetheart Deodorant (100ml for $22) is I Luv It best-seller deodorant. I enjoy this deodorant the most because of its creamy texture, which melts right into the skin. The deodorant is formulated with only 6 ingredients! Also, it’s made without baking soda, so it is suitable for even the most sensitive skin. My biggest issue with it is that it stains white clothing, which is such a shame. Also, the spicy vanilla scent is a bit too sweet for my personal liking. However, this did not affect the ratings; I still think this deodorant is one of the best ones out there in its performance.

See the ingredients:

Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), Arrowroot (Maranta arundinacea) powder, Magnesium Hydroxide, Beeswax (Cera alba), 100% Natural Vanilla extract, Melaleuca alternifolia.

Ginger Michelle Apothecary Make A Wish Natural Deodorant BalmAlthough, Ginger Michelle Make A Wish Natural Deodorant Balm (75g for $22) has the most beautiful packaging in the whole category, I gave this deodorant one of the the lowest ratings. Simply, for a couple of things: its chalky texture and clothing stains. I think kaolin clay is responsible for this, but honestly, even though the stains easily wash off, I don’t think I would repurchase it because it’s too much trouble.

Overall rating: 4/10

Thanks for Your honest review! I got to judge natural deodorants for CBA three years ago, that’s how I started out with them. Natural deos is such a tough nut to crack, I know I had hard time finding the one that works – for years actually. All these brands You show us here are new to me, that’s the beauty of green beauty blogosphere – I am always learning of new brands from my blogger friends. That still brings me joy after a decade. I think I’d like to try that anti-perspirant in the fun pouch, it is calling… Read more »
