First Impression: H&M Conscious Beauty Line

HM Conscious BeautyEarlier this year H&M announced its eco-friendly and organic beauty line with almost thirty certified products for face, body, and hair. It wasn’t long until all products were available in H&M stores worldwide and, I believe, online as well.

The packaging is similar to the basic H&M beauty range – clean and minimalistic. H&M promises that none of the conscious products contain genetically modified organisms and synthetic perfumes and dyes. Also, all of them are certified by Ecocert. Speaking of the ingredients, they are pretty basic in all products: Aloe vera leaf juice, jojoba oil, shea butter, and various essential oils such as lemon, lavender, etc. You won’t see any exotic oils or extracts, but that’s the point of the whole range – it was created to be affordable (none of the products exceed $13 price tag) and accessible to everyone. I also like the fact that there are in-store samples available for all products (except shampoos for obvious reasons).

The two products I bought were Lemon Lip Balm and Sweet Lemon Hand Wash. I was tempted to get a Cooling Face Mask because it had such a nice refreshing and hydrating consistency, so I imagine it would be great to use after a day in the sun in summer to revitalize and cool down the skin. However, I have a history of my skin not liking products with peppermint, so that’s why I passed. I also passed on shampoos, because, in my opinion, they are overpriced for such poor ingredient lists.

Lemon Lip Balm (7.5g)
This is a very nice lip balm. First of all, a mix of vanillin and lemon peel oil makes it smell (and taste) like citrus cheesecake. No kidding! Though, I wish the scent would be more gentle. The lip balm has a creamy consistency, which feels moisturizing and protecting. Like most lip balms, it doesn’t stay long on the lips, but I don’t mind reapplying it. Overall, I’m impressed and will definitely be trying other lip balms from the new Conscious range.

See the ingredients:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil*, Beeswax (Cera Alba)*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Palmitic/Stearic Triglyceride, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Esters, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Jojoba Esters, Water (Aqua), Vanillin, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Limonene, Citral, Flavor (Aroma). *ingredients from organic farming. Certified by Ecocert.

Sweet Lemon Handwash (250ml)
My favorite hand washes for a long time have been South Of France natural hand washes (if you haven’t tried them, I highly recommend!). I usually prefer liquid hand wash instead of soap bars, so I was excited to see that H&M also has liquid hand wash in its Conscious range. Although it’s called sweet citrus, its actual scent is lavender. I love lavender, so no complaints here. It’s a lovely, simple hand wash, which is gentle and soft.

See the ingredients:

Water (Aqua), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Glycerin**, Lauryl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Extract*, Glyceryl Caprylate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), Linalool, Limonene, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Oil, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Gluconate, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Sorbic Acid. *ingredients from organic farming. Certified by Ecocert.

Both products go for approximately $7.99/£5.99.

I’ve tried their Vitalising Body Oil which is okay but I’m really not into the fact that they use the ‘parfum’ cover-all. I think I that I much prefer to use smaller brands that are more forthcoming with their ingredients.

I agree with you, Katie. Even though, they claim that “parfum” means only natural essential oils.

Good to hear the hand wash isn’t drying. Odd that it smells like lavender though, haha.

I was expecting fresh and citrus-y scent, so it was a bit surprising :))
